If your mechanics are sound, there's not much a pro can add.

I could not disagree more.

A good pro can improve ANYONES game. Mechanics are the first step to a low handicap. One must also learn specialty shots, mental toughness and proper practice techniques. For most the process of getting to a single digit handicap takes years and years. A good pro can cut the time it takes in half.
