I love the Princess Bride...."You killed my father, prepare to die." Yes, it's hard to see the forest through the trees but developing a strong instinctive feel for what is going on helps. You just have to trust your gut, and those of the people you surround yourself with. Keep testing your assumptions and noting the instances that you get it right, then your conviction grows.
