NTT ups profit estimates, looks to
the UK

Japan's incumbent telecommunications provider,
NTT Corp, nearly doubled its profit forecast for
the current fiscal year ending March 2001
yesterday, revising its projected consolidated
profits to 172 billion yen from an earlier projection
of 99 billion yen.

NTT also raised its projected consolidated pretax
profits from 675 billion yen to 733 billion yen.

The company said earlier that it was enjoying
strong revenue growth as a result of mounting
demand from dial-up Internet users as well as
ISDN subscribers.

Meanwhile, NTT's mobile arm, DoCoMo, is
reportedly readying a bid with European partner,
KPN Mobile, for Hutchison's UK-based operation,
which holds one of four slots of 3G spectrum in
that market.

Market rumors say DoCoMo and KPN Mobile is
expected to pay up to US$2 billion for about 35%
of a joint-venture between Hong Kong's Hutchison
and Canada's Telesystem International Wireless.
Hutchison will remain the majority shareholder
with 48% of the entity while TIW will retain a 7%
stake.
