Siemens Atea and Terayon to Provide IP Backbone Solutions Worldwide

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 2000--To better
serve the communications needs of the growing small office/home office
(SOHO), small-to-medium enterprise (SME) and corporate network
markets, Terayon Communication Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:TERN) and Siemens
Atea have signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop and supply
backbone IP solutions to provide enhanced, added-value voice and data
services with end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities to
ensure the highest level of performance.
Siemens customers worldwide will deploy Terayon's HighLink(TM)
routers, which provide bandwidth management, traffic prioritization,
security, Virtual Private Networking (VPN) and routing capabilities.
HighLink will enhance Siemens' IP-based backbone infrastructure and
allow the implementation of end-to-end QoS services for a wide
spectrum of applications at the end users' premises.
"In order to be successful in the provisioning of real-time voice
and multicast applications to the end user's desktop, the 'best
effort' data delivery services that were good enough for typical IP
applications are no longer acceptable. That is why we looked at how we
could deliver the differentiated Quality of Service, present in the
core of the backbone and campus networks, straight to the desktops at
the edge of the network," said Dirk Steel, director of Network
<25>Solutions and Communication Services for Siemens Atea. "By integrating
Solutions and Communication Services for Siemens Atea. "By integrating
Terayon's HighLink routers into our Surpass, Unisphere and HiPath
solution portfolio we ensure the Quality of Service implementation in
IP networks in a consistent way, all the way across the backbone
network to the end user that is making use of the provisioned IP
services."
"Siemens has made network-based IP services a reality and we are
delighted to work together to provide solutions that offer businesses
the next wave of value-added Internet services," said Jonathan Lison,
vice president of sales for Terayon's Integrated DSL systems.
"Together, Siemens Atea and Terayon have created a cost-effective,
flexible and scalable IP-based solution that can deliver VPNs and
managed firewalls with end-to-end Quality of Service at application
levels, enabling service providers and corporations to provide
enhanced services to their customers and employees."
HighLink routers use a powerful packet classifier to identify
criteria, such as source or destination address, for end-to-end QoS
services. This capability is crucial for Voice over IP (VoIP) and
Video over IP applications. Network control, privacy and
predictability are effectively ensured by the definition of policy
criteria, and through a powerful firewall with different levels of
prioritization and bandwidth reservation capabilities.

The use of HighLink routers will allow customers to enjoy the
benefits of VPNs with a cost-effective, single box and easily
controllable solution without routing and addressing conflicts.
HighLink's IPSec-based VPN capabilities ensure optimum security, with
authentication, authorization, data and reply protection, and
encryption.
Terayon's HighLink routers are ideal for ISPs, SOHOs and SMEs
requiring LAN-to-LAN or Internet connectivity over ISDN, Frame Relay,
leased line and PSTN. Its dual LAN models can be connected to
broadband modems and provide connectivity over cable television,
wireless LAN or xDSL. Easy to install and use, the HighLink line's
powerful IP/IPX-based routing capabilities and remote auto
configuration features make them ideal for networks with growing
needs.
