Long Beach Island, which is about 20 or 30 miles north of Atlantic City, is quite beautiful, and very family oriented. We had a nice little cottage by the beach, about a half block down the street. We arrived first, and prepared things for my brother's family, which arrived the next day. Also, I got a visit from George Coyne, who occasionally participates on the threads, more often lurks, but who works near enough that he helped me in my search for a place in Jersey. It was swell to meet my first SIer in person! My nephew just finished kindergarten, and my nieces are still toddlers, while my son is 16, so there were many adults to watch the kids, and my son was wonderful about playing with the boy. We did various things: went to arcades, took a boat ride on the bay side of the island, visited an historic lighthouse. At the end of the week, our families split, and mine went up to stay by the Newark Airport for a couple of days, went to Broadway to see "Rent", went to Queens to see a museum about film and tv, went to Coney Island and Brighton Beach, which is now called "Little Odessa" because of the strong Russian presence. After the weekend, we stayed a couple of nights at a Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in Times Square: went to the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a Times Square movie theater (a HUGE multiplex) to see "Shaft" (Samuel Jackson is great), and ate very well. At various points, we hit Chinatown and Little Italy (lunches), a northern Italian restaurant in the Theater District (fancy food, casual dress), and I had borscht and stuffed cabbage in Little Odessa. They had fireworks barges on the East River, the Hudson, and in New York Harbor. It turned out that one of the barges was at the end of 47th Street, so we could watch the fireworks from the streetcorner by our hotel. I tried to see Monica's neighborhood, in Brooklyn, but although I got close, it happened that I had not brought the address, so I never found it precisely. We drove around, the last day, quite a bit, and stopped on the way home to get some rest at the end of the NJ Turnpike. We finished the drive today. Believe it or not, I had a pot pie at a Cracker Barrel country restaurant last night. It stuck to the ribs.........
