Oops, I managed to catch it myself, just not as quickly as you did.

If you can get quotes on a trade-by-trade basis, you can watch Them try. Sometimes the ask simply ticks up for no reason whatsoever. I've seen it on MU, for example, time and time again, for four or five points in an afternoon, up a sixteenth every two or three minutes whether there's any trading or not. Totally artificial, but it happens. One of my favorite quotes from The Terminator always comes to mind when I see it happening: "It can't be bargained with! It can't be reasoned with! It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear! And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead!"

It is apparent that They knew that the fix was in for the afternoon, and probably for tomorrow's Number as well. No way did somebody (or some computer) make a trade like that out of the blue without being completely certain that it wouldn't be a loser. They would have been certain, at least, that they would get a little bit of a pop to step back and see if it was going to be a decent play, and to plan an exit strategy in case it wasn't.
