Hi ole 49r,

Actually there is a new laser treatment now for macular degeneration patients that looks to be incredible. The biggest problem with the "wet" form of macular degeneration is the new blood vessels which grow into the macula and then break, leaking into that sensitive area.

In the past you could laser around the macula any leaking blood vessels and seal them, but you could not directly laser the macula area itself. The laser would do much more harm than good.

This new procedure involves infusing a special substance we affectionately refer to as the "green goo" IV and then after a specified period of time a special non burning laser set a specific wavelength is directed onto the macula area itself. The green goo is a light activated substance which essentially burns the bad blood vessels without harming the good ones. The process has to be repeated every 3 months for at least a year. After that they evaluate to see if additional treatments are needed.

If a person already has some loss of vision, this treatment won't bring it back but if caught in the early stages it is looking promising that we will now be able to halt the progress or considerably slow down what used to be a slow but sure loss of the central vision.

We are shortly about to begin to treat MD patients in our clinic. We are waiting the final word from Medicare on the procedure being covered by them. I will keep you posted.

Any other questions, holler.

Joel
