The company described below developed a proprietary technology which revolutionized first the retail industry and then seeped gradually into nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Part of the technology was promoted as a free, widely accepted, defacto standard that all of us would immediately recognize. The proprietary portion of the technology, which is revenue bearing, was licensed out to competitors. Aside from these royalties, the company in question is also a manufacturing leader in this industry.
