You seem to be supporting my position that cell phone growth in Europe is strong--even more than I did, with your comments about everybody having one or two. I have been to Europe (England, France) and I know how poor the land service is.

I believe that the users may not all be "new" for Vodaphone in Europe (but from acquired cos.)...but as you point out, these users tend to get a new phone often when changing service anyway. However, I would hazard to guess that the millions of new users in China are truly new. Plus, in China there is huge room for growth. This alone could eat up many, many chips.

Incidentally, how popular are the newer phones with the data features over there?

As if on cue, great news! China opening up

[More capital for investment in Chinese telecom infrastructure!]

Thursday July 6, 11:22 pm Eastern Time
HK's Hang Seng jumps 2.02 pct
Technical problems with the Hong Kong Exchange's trading system, lasting 12 minutes, slowed trade and turnover totalled a low HK$3.812 billion by mid-morning.

Market sentiment was helped at the outset by a 2.52 percent jump in the Nasdaq composite index (^IXIC - news) overnight, traders said.

China Mobile , formerly known as China Telecom, was leading the market higher. By mid-morning the stock was up 3.61 percent at HK$71.75, helped by a report in The Asian Wall Street Journal that China is preparing to open its telecom sector to foreign investors.
