As someone who is becalmed in that 3G fog bank, I won't pretend to make sense of the following release, but perhaps others could comment on the significance, if any.

Ericsson selected as 3G supplier for Tele1 Europe in
Sweden and Norway

July 7, 2000

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 2000
via NewsEdge Corporation -

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY) has been selected as
preferred 3G supplier for Tele1 Europe Holding AB.
Ericsson will deliver a WCDMA system and services if
Tele1 Europe is granted a license.

Tele1 Europe is applying for a license for UMTS networks
in Sweden and Norway and Ericsson will support Tele1
Europe in that process. This is the seventh 3G
agreement awarded to Ericsson.

Ericsson will as preferred supplier deliver and implement
a 3G system, based on WCDMA, including services and
mobile phones. Ericsson will actively be part of features
and end-user service development for Tele1 Europe.
Ericsson will also be the preferred supplier of the GSM
expansion for Tele1 Europe in Sweden.

"We are well positioned and Tele1 Europe will apply for a
license for a third generation mobile system, UMTS,
alone or together with other players," says Christer
Palmgren, Director Mobile Services, Tele1 Europe. "We
chose Ericsson because of their leading position in 3G
and our well established relationship."

Tele1 Europe is the first Scandinavian operator to select
Ericsson's 3G WCDMA system.

Based on WCDMA technology, Ericsson's 3G system to
be supplied can also be referred to as UMTS, a European
denomination for 3G. UMTS stands for Universal Mobile
Telecommunications System.

The license process in Sweden is awarding the operators
based on coverage and the rate of development of the
3G systems and services. The National Post and Telecom
Agency (PTS) of Sweden will make the list of awarded
operators public in November. Norwegian Post and
Telecommunications Authority (PT) will make the list of
awarded operators public in October-November.

Ericsson is ideally positioned to support any operator
anywhere to migrate to 3G systems - regardless of
technology heritage or technology choice. Ericsson will
be offering 3G systems based on WCDMA, cdma2000,
and EDGE - being the only supplier with a complete
portfolio for second and third generation systems.
Ericsson has been awarded seven 3G agreements in
Japan, Finland, UK and now Norway and Sweden.

Ericsson is the leading communications supplier,
combining innovation in mobility and Internet in creating
the new era of Mobile Internet. Ericsson provides total
solutions covering everything from systems and
applications to mobile phones and other communications
tools. With more than 100,000 employees in 140
countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for

Ericsson's end-to-end 3G solutions

Ericsson is leading the development of 3G mobile
communications and the transition to 3G systems.
Ericsson offers a smooth transition path from all 2G
systems to 3G systems based on WCDMA, cdma2000
and EDGE. Ericsson is the only supplier with a full range
of both second and third generation systems.

WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) is one
of the third generation radio interface technologies that
is optimized for wideband radio access to support
high-speed multimedia services such as video
conferencing and Internet, as well as voice calls.
WCDMA allows the wireless bandwidth to be tailored
efficiently to the needs of each individual call, whether it
is voice, data or multimedia. It can handle both packet
and circuit switched services. Multiple calls of different
types can be simultaneously made.
