It's not the language, it's the living arrangements, and the lack of employment, and the willingness to exploit Elian, and the hospitalizations, and The Fisherman seems to me completely unsavory- have you seen this man? He's got several ex-wives. He seems fairly unstable. Now I don't guarantee "they" (whoever you want to include in the they) wouldn't qualify as foster parents or adoptive parents- but I'd be willing to be money that they wouldn't. <p>
You want to make it about race- that's a good tactic. That's what was done in the OJ case. Try to whip up folks into a fury about race and you obscure the real issue. The real issue is PERSONAL fitness, not cultural identity. It's not MY fault I know so much about these people- but they exposed themselves for the media. When you exploit the media it exploits you back- and you (or THEY) reveal stuff that is quite embarrassing. I'm sorry for them. But this ONE very strange "family" brought this on themselves. And it has nothing to do with race or nationality.

We don't know how free his choice was, but we have to honor it anyway. Free or not, it is his choice and his son.

Saying that the household where Elian was living would not qualify for adoptive or foster parentage is not slander, it is a statement of fact. Have you any idea how strict the rules governing adoptive and foster parentage are? The household had no married couple. Nobody in the household was gainfully employed. One member of the household had a record of hospitalization for stress, another had repeated DUI convictions. Any one of those factors would eliminate them from consideration if they applied to be foster or adoptive parents.
