"...a 50-channel solution may not necessarily be inadequate to compete."

lml- Ouch. I would hate to be the sales clerk on the other end of the line when they are asked, "How many channels can I get?" And the potential subscriber is told, "Fifty." I think that would be a lost sale even if it's thrown in that they get to hand-pick the fifty. But of course this is only if that sub can dial another number and subscribe to 200 channels at the same price.

The US mentality, is more is better and we can't go backwards. You and I may feel differently about 300 channels and nothing is on, but I think the average TV consumer doesn't care. He just wants it.

BUT, OTOH as we just talked about upstream, if it's a switched digital video(SDV) model being proposed by the UK SP, then I think the 50 channel figure is kind of arbitrary. Depending upon the relationship the SP builds with the content providers. I think this must be the situation. Or maybe it's a matter of how much delivery equipment the SP can afford to purchase for the, "headend."

Hmmm...wonder if the CO will be referred to as the headend in situations like this? -MikeM(From Florida)
