Chan of Team StreetSideInvestor back Hi, this is Danny Chan with StreetSideInvestor’s Executive’s Corner. Today, we are speaking to Mr. Mark Gercenstein, Chief Executive Officer and Director of InterDigital Communications Corporation. InterDigital is a premier developer of innovative technologies for the wireless communications industry. It has extensive knowledge in digital wireless technology with specialized expertise in air interface design and development. InterDigital has a proven ability to embed sophisticated technology in commercial products. StreetSideInvestor: Mr. Gercenstein, what does InterDigital do? Mr. Gercenstein: Danny, we are a developer of advanced technologies, primarily focused on the telecommunications marketplace. Our technologies are aimed at delivering voice and data over a wireless air interface. That is what we do. StreetSideInvestor: How is InterDigital’s technology used in everyday lives? Mr. Gercenstein: Anybody who uses a GSM telephone or some derivative of a GSM wireless telephone may use InterDigital’s technology when they communicate through the air interface. StreetSideInvestor: What is the extent of InterDigital’s relationship with Nokia? Mr. Gercenstein: We have an extensive relationship with Nokia, both in the technology licensing area as well as a development of a piece of their 3rd generation technology called TDD. We are developing the entire technology suite for time-division duplex technology and expect it to be one of the third generation offerings from Nokia. StreetSideInvestor: Why did InterDigital decide to make the move to Nasdaq? Mr. Gercenstein: Well, we wanted to gain more efficient access to equity capital. We felt that Nasdaq would provide that for us. We wanted to be among the high-tech brethren on the Nasdaq, more so than the other exchanges. The appearance of being linked to the high-tech world and access to equity capital are important to us. StreetSideInvestor: There’s been a lot of talk recently in the media about 3G. What is 3G, and how is it different from the other standards in the wireless industry? Mr. Gercenstein: I’ll offer a little tutorial here. Back in the early 80s, when cellular telephony was first commercially available around the world, it was analog. It was strictly voice, and was considered the first generation of wireless technology. In the mid to late 90s, we saw an evolution to digital technology, which is much more spectrally efficient. The phones were smaller, but were still pretty much voice-driven. Third-Generation technology is going to be digital, it will give you all the benefits of voice communications, but it will also make available access to the Internet. So, using mobile wireless devices, you will be able to communicate with your office and your family as if you’re using a regular telephone, but you will also be able to download from the Internet all of the data and information you may need. You will effectively use your handset just like you use your desktop today. StreetSideInvestor: How is InterDigital involved with 3G? Mr. Gercenstein: We are developing the core technology, which will be a critical element in the air interface, allowing portable consumer devices to link to networks via the air interface. So, we are right in the center of the technology development for the Third Generation. StreetSideInvestor: With so much intellectual property, how many patents does InterDigital hold and how does this separate you from some of your competitors? Mr. Gercenstein: First of all, we hold about 800 patents and patent applications, which are primarily exclusively in the world of wireless telecommunications marketplace. StreetSideInvestor: Excellent. If you can tell our readers one thing about InterDigital, what would it be? Mr. Gercenstein: That we are perfectly positioned to play a role in what I would consider the largest telecommunications market revolution, or evolution, that has ever occurred. I think what you’re going to see is growth, you’re going to see incredible technological advancements, which all translate to services that up until now could not be imagined in a world of mobility. So, we’re in this very exciting market space, we have a certain role that we have carved out for ourselves, and I think we will be a participant in a very, very large marketplace.
