John,

<AMD should use the money to invest in infrastructure companies (chipsets, motherboards, info applicances).>

Agree. I don't know if some of you took the notice of AMD's 3-stooge strategy from Ruiz's recent interviews. The third one is net/info applicances. Everybody and his brothers are buzzing about that now. But I paid far more attention to that knowing where Ruiz is from. In the telecom/network product engineering, MOT is far more important than INTC in the minds of the engineers. When Ruiz is talking about ICs in those business areas, he is far more credible and experienced than all the talking heads combined over INTC, IMHO. If AMD and MOT can complement each other in those new net/info segments, AMD will become one of the premier networking IC vendors in 2-3 years. Also remember Ruiz mentioned that he is surprised by the number of talented AMD engineers in the networking areas in a previous interview. All put together, I bet Ruiz will try to cement his place at AMD by bringing AMD to be a premier networking IC vendor.

If Ruiz can continue Jerry's legacy in the MPU business and develop a sophisticated netowrking business, AMD may very well be a better long term investment than any other IC firm out there, IMHO.

Petz,

There is nothing evil about the 11% note. The only attractive part is that retiring this debt provides a convenient capital loss for the Q3. Other than that, the interest "savings" for the future will have to paid for now in for of a premium, and the $450 million cash on hand will no longer be earning interest income.

The economical effect on the company is a wash. It is only important for the book, tax and psychological purposes.
