My point is, you can have the superior technology- even a monopoly on that technology- and still be defeated in the marketplace. The average consumer doesn't know what CDMA or Qualcomm is. They know that a Nokia phone looks great and performs reasonably well. The manufacturers can foist whatever technology they please on the public, within reason, provided it provides decent service. The consumer will be none the wiser. I think this conversation needs to be taken to a different level. What's needed here, IMO, is some kind of political hardball- for example, maybe some stiff import tariffs on NOKIA products, and subsidies for manufacturers that are implementing CDMA. Our government should take positive action to assure that a superior home-grown technology finds a market worldwide amongst our trading partners. Merely having the best possible technology isn't enough. We need the strategic alliances to back it up, to create the applications for 3G, etc. We need Korea. We need Japan. We could sure use China. And yes, we need Nokia.
