RB, i agree 100%...that is indeed the nature of aging trends.

btw, here's an interesting article by Ed Bugos...i highly recommend looking up his previous articles in the archives as well. he is one of the most eloquent purveyors of the bear case for equities and the bullish case for gold.

and here a reply by Bob Bronson on the LW site to me on the question of what he expects for gold, as his research suggests a deflationary economic collapse lies ahead...it summarizes his position nicely:

More ways for women to wear gold:
AFRICA DESIGNS M-NET AND ANGLOGOLD FOR FUTURE FASHION

Date: Thursday, July 06, 2000

Following the success of the Face of Africa fashion contest earlier this year to promote modelling talent from Africa, AngloGold and M-Net have now become partners to promote African fashion and gold jewellery design to create a new African style for the 21st Century.

Ready-to-wear collections designed by sixteen of the continent’s most aspirant designers will be showcased at an event to be held on Thursday 13 July 2000 at the Vodadome in Johannesburg. Four designers will be selected to present their designs at the international fashion industry’s calendar highlight: New York’s celebrated Fashion Week in September this year.

Commenting on AngloGold’s association with M-Net on Africa Designs, Kelvin Williams, AngloGold’s Executive Director Marketing says, "Africa Designs presents a great opportunity for AngloGold to show the fashion world the wealth of gold jewellery design inspiration and excellence that is available. By encouraging the aspiring designers of Africa Designs to incorporate gold jewellery and accessories into their collections, AngloGold believes that a new African Style highlighting the glamour, richness and versatility of gold can be created for the new millennium."

AngloGold’s business objectives are to generate value for its shareholders from goldmining and other gold industry activities and to ensure long-term healthy demand for gold. As the world’s largest producer of gold, the company is committed to helping the gold industry prosper and to stimulating new demand through promoting gold jewellery design and technical creativity, and exposing the fashion world to the versatility and possibilities of working with gold.

Gold, as the most malleable and easily worked precious metal, can now be made in every conceivable shape, colour, and texture. New technologies enable gold to be made into much larger and more complex designs with extreme hardness for better durability. Gold can be made into a wide spectrum of colours, including white, black, green, blue, red, pink and virtually every shade of yellow. Manufacturing innovation today enables gold to assume soft patinas, mirror-like finishes, every conceivable texture, and a new fluidity. New technologies allow gold to be knitted or beaten so thin it appears to be fabric, enabling graceful movement with the body.

The tremendous flexibility of gold makes it ideal for today’s rapidly changing fashions, allowing a variety of expression to suit the mood and lifestyle.

AngloGold is working closely with the fashion world to educate designers on the developments in the gold industry and the possibilities of “Styling with Gold” to stimulate creativity and inspire new technologies and uses for gold. AngloGold believes that Africa Designs will pave the way for collaborative initiatives between goldsmiths and fashion designers to create fashion with an authentic African flavour which can be catapulted into the international fashion scene.

AngloGold’s involvement with Africa Designs is just one of several projects focussing on developing and promoting the African gold jewellery industry. Other projects include sponsoring the Riches of Africa annual gold jewellery design competition, the Vukani-Ubuntu craft goldsmithing education programme, the Gold of Africa museum collection, and the E-commerce venture, GoldAvenue, which will soon retail African jewellery.
