3Com goes to Korea for CDMA 2000
June 06, 2000

The move toward the next generation in wireless network technology has taken a step forward with an announcement from 3Com Corp. (COMS) and two of South Korea's largest telecom companies.

Officials with 3Com and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. said today that a joint technology project will be used by Seoul-based SK Telecom Co. Ltd. (SKM) for its new CDMA 2000 network. The new network will be the first of its kind to be based on CDMA 2000 technology, which is a more advanced version of the current CDMA used by many wireless carriers in the U.S. and Asia.

Irfan Ali, senior vice president and general manager of 3Com's carrier network business, said the deal with the Korean telecom was a "significant development" in the evolution of wireless networks.

The new network being built by 3Com and Samsung is supposed to be able to speed up mobile data services between two and 15 times faster than current CDMA speeds. The network will also support the delivery of audio, video and data simultaneously.

SK Telecom expects to have the new network up and covering nearly all of South Korea by fall 2000. The company currently has more than 10 million wireless subscribers and has plans to hit 12 million by the end of the year.

CDMA is popular in Korea, where Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), the company that invented CDMA, has built up the technology.

3Com shares were unchanged at $47.31 at 2:44 EDT.
