Napster is not the only song-swapping software. A group of programmers at a
unit acquired by America Online developed a Napster-like program called
Gnutella that was released onto the Internet in March. AOL subsequently
announced the Web site housing the unauthorized project had been removed.

But unauthorized versions of the software remain available on the Net. Unlike
Napster, which uses central computers known as servers to link people
swapping songs, Gnutella requires no central computer. And Gnutella can be
used to swap picture and video files as well as MP3 music files.
