It shouldn't be surprising there is life under the icecap. The Piri Re'is map clearly shows a navigable coastline where there is now ice. The map is dated in the Moslem year 919, which is 1513 in the Gregorian calendar, but it was copied from much older portolan (port to port) charts which were used by sailors. These portolanos are much more accurate than Ptolemy's Map, and were never referred to by the Academy. There was an apparent disconnect between the academic mapmaker and the navigator.

There are other maps that show vegetation at the South Pole, like the Dulcert Portolano of 1339, the de Canestris Map of 1335-37, and the Yu Chi Fu Map of the 12th century. There is a great book on this subject by Charles Hapgood called "Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings".
