There has typically been a scramble to close deals at the end of each quarter so the sellers could "make their quarter." Perhaps that's turned around now with times being a little tougher and there's been a "scramble to delay" purchases so the BUYERS can make THEIR quarter.

JMHO.

mike: This is a critical point for the chartist. There has been a bit of a ceiling here. However if you are a chartist MSFT looks good here as it as it's lows and highs are ascending. The close at 82 was very encouraging. Fundamentally I think we are seeing a shift to W2K. As the word gets out on its stability and flexibility it will begin to find new markets especially in the enterprise area. It appears it might be even starting to erode the mainframe motif at a lot of larger clients. I read with interest that SUNW is now rushing a compiler to market to support XML. MSFT is the leader in XML and this is a very telling thing as folks move fromm Java to XML. I can't think of a better stock (MSFT because of the phony DOJ suit has been greatly over-discounted) to own in these uncertain times where the market can eithr soar toward 5000 plus or retest the mid 3000's. I think the earnings will be good this qrtr. as we have seen little in the way of significant preannouncements. On a macro basis there is a ton of $$$ on the sidelines and it is waiting to see if this bull has legss here or whether the can buy in more cheaply. The potential for a big rally is there. The CA deal is to me much like the CPQ debacle when their outgoing CEO tried to blame it on market conditions instead of their own poor execution. If anything it might buttress the argument made earlier in this post. I can't see the world going back to the thin client(dumb terminal)/mainframe mode as that certainly flies in the face of what we have come to know as networked CPU's. MSFT is gaining momentum and so is its stock. JFD
