Below is a link snatched from 'Mr.Greenjeans' on the Vodafone thread, an incredible info hound. This summarizes the current state of bidding for European license spectrum:

Obviously the Big Boys are trying to avoid a repeat of the British disaster, and it appears that the Dutch and German governments won't rake in euros by the truckload. Even so, we are talking gargantuan numbers here.
George Gilder maintains spectrum is infinite. IJ says the internet is the network and the particular 'flavor' doesn't matter. Can anybody explain why the world's largest telcos are forking out billions for this stuff? Does anybody have a clue what IJ meant?
This year's FUD wars make the little tiff with Ericcy look like a small scale skirmish. Even the folks on this thread are confused (needless to say including me). We're starting to mimic the bunker mentality of 1996 on Craig Schilling's thread. I'm focused on VOD, NOK, and NTT as I think strategic decisions by these companies will have an immense impact on Qualcomm's fortunes. Less important to me are the current press releases out of Korea--they're either negotiating or legitimately gearing up to have product to sell into Europe. If they think WCDMA is the answer to mesh with GSM, then it might be just a simple no brainer without dark mystery complexities. Since the Q gets paid either way, it is meaningless FUD. regards, SM
