(San Jose, Calif.), that intends to offer storage technology and systems for consumer electronics. CacheVision has already begun operations, using Seagate's consumer solutions organization as its core. Richard Johnson, formerly vice president of the consumer solutions group at Seagate (Scotts Valley, Calif.), has been named president and chief executive officer of CacheVision. Both Seagate and Thomson will own a 50 percent stake in the company. The company is expected to initially employ about 100 workers initially in the areas of design, development and customization of storage devices. The company will use the manufacturing capabilities of Seagate and Thomson to work on integrated modules, component subsystems and potentially complete OEM consumer devices. Such systems would comprise a mix of technologies, including disk drives, compression hardware and software, analog-to-digital conversion, and interface connectivity, the companies said. CacheVision is emphasizing the role that software will play in its offerings. Describing a hard-drive based video recorder as an example, the company said the the ability to view thousands of television programs delivered through hundreds of cable, satellite or terrestrial channels will depend on navigation systems, electronic program guides, and preference engines written in software. Thomson Multimedia (Paris), the world's fourth largest consumer electronics manufacturer, brings CacheVision expertise in some television applications, and could help CacheVision link up with some of Thomson's strategic partners, such as Microsoft and DirecTV. But observers said Thomson's consumer electronics rivals may be inhibited from dealing with CacheVision. "Consumers are searching for new features, such as time shifting and services on demand, permitted by the integration of storage capacity in consumer electronics products, leading ultimately to the advent of personal television," said Thierry Breton, chairman and chief executive officer of Thomson Multimedia . "We intend to provide answers that consumers expect for information storage capacity in a wide range of products. This new activity should rapidly reach a worldwide leadership position."
