"I am not sure what densities will be supported in DDR, but it is safe to assume that it will be equal to or greater than the SDRAM predecessors"

Such an assumption is far from safe. Due to the higher frequencies, timing difficulties and lower stability of DDR RAM compared to SDRAM, it will be difficult for DDR to ever match the number of memory slots that can be implemented in an SDRAM system. The same goes for RDRAM with the exception that lower pincount makes multiple channels easier to implement with RDRAM. The modular chipsets for P4 will allow 2 RDRAM channels per 4 processor group, enabling for e.g. a 32 processor system with 16 RDRAM channels. Whether anyone will actually go to such expense in designing a 32 processor system around this modular idea is another question.
