Eric L-- <WCDMA was defined with no requirements on second-generation backward compatibility.> That was the bitter part. Qualcomm in the winter of '99 advised that they would never license a variation on the technology they created which stranded existing customers. Apparently changes began post-haste.

<The goal of an unqualified single standard for implementation worldwide is not a reality. Operators have too much invested in their existing infrastructure and subscriber base; however, limited worldwide roaming will be possible with 3G.> (From the Intel article) Intel is working on dual and tri-mode asics, but their idea of "limited" is questionable. Dr. Jacobs is confident that 1)Qualcomm's multi-mode asics will be "superior"; 2) we'll be moving to common network protocols on the internet.

The technology and its jargon can be difficult, but at least now we can put in context what that little "i" stands for.

QCOM

Eric, as you can see, I am way behind in reading the messages, so forgive me if the question below has already been answered. You quoted an article on the Intel Developers site:

"Both the DS and MC options are available in the forward link only. The reverse link supports only the DS option."

Which is the forward link? Is it phone-to-cell or cell-to-phone. Thanks in advance.
