The problem with this approach culd be video. Is integrated video part of the Northbridge?

Yes. The so-called North Bridge is primarily a memory controller (or most importantly anyway), but the video adapter is the peripheral that needs memory the most, too. Which takes us back to my favorite chipset design lurking in the background, the Nvidia X-box video system, with its claimed 6+ gb/sec DDR memory controller, originally designed to interface to the Athlon. I don't know how close it is to production, but odds are it could be shipped before MSFT gets its software act together there.
