Hi lml,

I've no desire to engage in a speculative bout here regarding things I know little about. Sm:)e. While I'll grant you that all the ILECs have made extensive study of VDSL, the most cogent explanation for the reality I see in the xDSL marketplace is contained in the Tom Nolle article I brought to the NFCTF last evening.
The heart of the matter here:
cimicorp.com
The fluff here:

Nolle's contention, and it seems perfectly plausible to me, is that VDSL is a T-1/T-3 killer and that no businessman in his right mind would create a $5 Billion business for the sake of destroying a $50 Billion business. Ain't gonna happen.

Re: I recall listening in on a conference call in and around the time Project Pronto
released about VDSL deployment by year end 2000. I have not heard anything about VDSL from SBC since.

And I recall hearing about DSL rolling out in the Bay Area by the end of 1997. I'm of the opinion that these pre-announcements and vaporware presentations are part of the strategy to keep the general public about as befuddled as possible.

Re: For some reason you seem bent on challenging the conclusion that SBC is eyeing VDSL.
No lml, that's not exactly what I was hoping to get across. In no way do I challenge the conclusion that SBC or any of the ILECs is eyeing VDSL. What I challenge is the view that any might hold that they are actually going to deploy VDSL in my lifetime. <gg>

Best, Ray
