"Are you implying that SBC will likely first deploy VDSL technology in those areas where an additional market participant is entering the "picture."

Yes, it makes sense to me that if they are threatened by some big gun approach (possibly even FTTH), they would be inclined to respond with a platform that is commensurate with, or better than, the encroacher's. Since they are already familiar with the dsl architecture and probably more comfortable with the economics of same, they'd be more inclined to use it as a response to a threat, or something comparable (possibly like the Integrated Fiber in The Loop, or IFITL, that BLS is putting in) than deploying it in some frivolous arbitrary manner. E.g., based on where their center of image is (where their HQ is, or where their officers go to sleep).

BTW, just because an encroacher uses a FTTH or IFITL model, it doesn't necessarily mean that they will immediately exploit all of the potential that those model imply. Witness how BLS holds out their 100 Mb/s Ethernet offering as a premium service (I'm not sure that anyone is actually using that yet.. I'm hoping that someone here could expand on this). Likewise, do they yet provide program video over their platform yet? Last time I looked they didn't. But that was a while ago.
