Fewer Companies Have Issued 2nd-Qtr Earnings Warnings, NYT Says

New York, July 9 (Bloomberg) -- The number of companies warning investors of earnings shortfalls is down substantially compared with last year, the New York Times reported in its `Market Watch' column. That means second-quarter year-over-year earnings growth may reach 23 or 24 percent compared with analysts' forecasts of 19.3 percent for the Standard & Poor's 500 companies, according to Charles L. Hill, research director for First Call/Thomson Financial, which tracks corporate earnings and analysts' forecasts. Hill said strong worldwide capital spending on technology, high consumer confidence, and mild inflation have combined to push operating earnings for the S&P 500 to an estimated $57.70 a share this year and $66.65 next year from $32.68 a share in 1994, the Times reported, without providing the number of companies which have issued earnings warnings this year.

Shares of Computer Associates International Inc. and BMC Software Inc. suffered their worst one-day slide ever last week after the U.S. software makers warned that last quarter's earnings missed expectations because sales weakened.

** Brinker Two Year Performance **

I have already posted Brinker's one year performance (see message I am responding to) and now let's look at the two year performance:

2 years ended 6-30-00 for Managed Equity Model Portfolios:
Model One: + 74.2%
Model Two: + 41.2%

Vanguard Total Market + 31.4% for VTSMX

Remember, Brinker has had 60% of these portfolios in cash for the first half of this year. Good job, Bob!
