All the parties have much to gain and it is in their self interest to devise some sort of compromise between WCDMA and CDMA. This will probably take place in some face saving manner. QCOM will get full royalties on WCDMA but will arrange a kick back by paying some smaller royalties to the WCDMA folks. Thus everybody will be able to say they won. Actually I would rather that QCOM get 3% royalties on a $3 billion market than 5% royalties on a $1 billion market. The bigger the market, the faster QCOM can consolidate it's gorilla status and the more ASIC it can sell. Technology marches on, and eventually something will show up that makes any kind of CDMA obsolescent, so QCOM needs to do what it takes to get the 3G show on the road.

How about..

1. The koreans talked to the Chinese and found out that they got some minor lower royalty rate and now want to negotiate in the press to get theri rates lowered. Rememer they sued Q last year to try to lower them. Now they are gettin gpromised that WCDMA will be lower, but then they are ignoring that Q will STILL ask for the saem royalty on this stuff even if it is licensed from ERICY and NOK. So in effect they are thinking that they can just avoid Q and their royalty and go with E and N. I would suspect that they will even expect E and N to take up the slack in case of an international lawsuit to collect royalties.

Also, don;t you think the real reason for the subsidy ban is becaue NOK just opened up shop in their coutrny to sell CDMA phones? They want to keep NOK from getting a foot hold in IS-95.
