To me this means that the protocols that differentiate GSM or wCDMA will lose significance as everything goes digital and is dumped into the "big internet pipe". It all becomes one "pipe".

It is one thing to think in terms of bridging networks via the internet, another to think of the network itself being replaced by the internet, and yet another to cross the last mile to the handset. Don't hold your breath waiting for the protocol wars to be over.
