"Is it common for the bookmark.htm file to simply disappear like that?" probably not common. i know i don't hear of it. one fellow on this thread about a year ago was super angry at netscape because his bookmarks had disappeared. but in the absence of a backup, pointing a finger at netscape is a bit like not being able to dance and blaming the floor. glad you have everything back in order.
