edit to previous QCOM post... might not have written that quite accurately.

The Reuters story quoted in IBD says:

three major telecom companies in Korea favor w-cdma over QCOM's cdma2000 for the third-generation mobile phone system. W-CDMA, developed by NOK and ERICY, is a mobile phone system that "competes with" QCOM's CDMA2000 for global wireless services.

"But the government has yet to decide on the standard for the third-generation system called IMT-2000."

"If the government lets telecom firms choose the standard, SK Telecom would pick W-CDMA" and two other firms share the same view.

Other quotes from the story, which originated in Seoul:

IMT-2000 is a family of standards for third-generation mobile communications services, which offer global roaming, high-speed Internet access, multi-media and real-time videoconferencing.

The new third-generation mobile services are scheduled to start by early 2002.
