Unfortunately, some people not looking at fab utilization rates and taking the equipment lag time into consideration, believe the train has derailed even before it has begun moving:-)

Merrill on DRAM prices

Merrill Lynch Analyst Joe Osha said that DRAM prices have steadily climbed back to levels not seen since the beginning of the year. He said recent channel checks are pointing "to the strong likelihood of a shortage late this year." Osha added that he's heard of further news of a global DRAM shortage. As a result, he reiterated his "buy" rating on Micron Technology (MU: news, msgs). That stock is up 3/4 at 90 1/4

Applied Materials Equips Trecenti Technologies' 300mm Fab
Broad Range of Applied Materials' 300mm Systems Ordered for Hitachi-UMC Joint Venture in Hitachinaka, Japan
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 2000--Applied Materials, Inc. announced today that Trecenti Technologies, Inc., a joint wafer fab of Hitachi, Ltd. and United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), has placed a multi-technology order for a variety of 300mm semiconductor manufacturing systems. Trecenti will use the systems to produce leading-edge chip technologies at 0.18 micron and beyond.

``We are confident that Applied Materials can help us bring our new facility to volume production very quickly,'' said Toshio Nohara, president of Trecenti Technologies, Inc. ``This new venture clearly reflects our commitment to becoming a pioneer in high performance 300mm manufacturing. Applied Materials' 300mm systems are expected to begin shipping to Trecenti in the third calendar quarter of 2000.
