Brazil Telefonica Cellular To Invest BRR60 Million In Project

Dow Jones Online News, 07/10/2000 14:08

SAO PAULO -(Dow Jones)- The cellular operators controlled by Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF) in Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo will spend about 60 million reals to develop wireless data services for their subscribers, a spokeswoman said Monday.

The service will be marketed as MoviStar Internet.

Content partners so far include the Terra and IG portals, news from Folha On Line, financial services from Investshop, travel services from Decolar.com, entertainment listings and services from ViaRio, Guia Local and Ingresso.com, sports news from Lance.net and banking services from Bradesco, Bank Boston, Banco Real, Itau and Boavista.

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) investment will be part of a total BRR416 million that the company plans to invest this year in its Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo wireless operations, the spokeswoman said.

In recent weeks cellular operators in Brazil have rushed to launch their WAP offerings, although market analysts note that very few WAP phones have reached the Brazilian market, and fewer still have been purchased by final users.

Telefonica will charge a monthly fee of BRR10 on top of the regular per-minute rates of BRR0,29 and of BRR0,19 per minute for off-peak hours. The company is selling two Motorola handset models for BRR899.

The company expects that of its 2.2 million customers between both states, some 300,000 will be using the MoviStar WAP service by year end.
