ENTIGO and BEA Team Up to Deliver Personalized E-Commerce Portal for Honeywell's Aviation Unit

BusinessWire, 07/11/2000 13:51

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 11, 2000--ENTIGO, an e-commerce software provider, today announced a collaboration with BEA Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:BEAS), The E-Commerce Transactions Company(TM), in building a customizable e-commerce site for Honeywell's (NYSE:HON) General Business and Aviation unit.

This unit manufactures and sells an extensive line of aviation products and services under the Bendix/King brand name. A combination of products from ENTIGO and BEA transformed the company's fledgling e-commerce site, www.BendixKing.com, into a user-friendly e-commerce portal for Honeywell customers, many of whom are airline pilots.

At the new website, pilots can review and purchase products through an authorized dealer - a one-stop web shopping experience that saves both time and money. Now, the online catalog is always up-to-date, the customer-profiling feature highlights products that will likely interest individual pilots based on their browsing and buying history and customers can track their order's status in real-time from anywhere.

With its attention to the quality and convenience of the customer experience, Honeywell is focusing on the key drivers of e-commerce success. In fact, Honeywell foresees a 20-30 percent increase in services provided via BendixKing.com as an online pilot-dealer community develops and transaction barriers, such as time zones and hours of operation, become obsolete.

The Challenge

"From the outset, we knew this wouldn't be an ordinary development project," recalled Rick Click, Honeywell's e-business director who supervised the project. "There were many unusual obstacles to overcome. For example, federal regulations prohibit pilots from buying directly from manufacturers - only certified dealers may sell, install and service aviation parts and equipment. Consequently, BendixKing.com needed to allow pilots to browse and select products, then contact a dealer and allow dealers and OEM's to place orders directly with Bendix/King."

The Solution

For BendixKing.com to accommodate the federal aviation regulations and provide top-notch customer service, ENTIGO built both its Catalog!(TM) and Order!(TM) applications on the market-leading BEA WebLogic Server(TM) which provides the flexibility and security of a server-side Java system - essential for managing the complex transaction chains spawned by the federal aviation regulations - while at the same time supporting the scalability, performance and reliability required of personalized e-commerce applications.

"The site's highly-sophisticated customer-profiling feature lets us identify the site's visitor, recall their account histories and cater to their individual purchasing needs," explained Click. With this customer-profiling module, which tracks and records all BendixKing.com site traffic, Honeywell can determine who is visiting the site, what pages they view, where they came from, where they go after leaving the site and, of course, what products they browsed or bought.

"It's critical nowadays to customize a web service for your customers," said Click. "ENTIGO's customer-profiling module allows us to perform a fine-grained level of customization, and that's really what separates a great product from a merely adequate one."

Using this personalization capability, Catalog! allows BendixKing.com to present a single, customer-specific view of its complete product offering, while Order! allows real-time, online transactions, such as order and quote requests, order-status inquiries, etc. Easily configurable to Honeywell's existing system and business processes, ENTIGO and BEA products allow BendixKing.com users to enjoy the convenience of personalized selections and the efficiency of Web-based transactions with unlimited access and availability.
