Well, it's diagnosed as a medical problem because that's what's required to prescribe drugs for it. Doctors use drugs instead of alternatives, counseling and such, because it's cheaper, and often works better anyway.

Not that I'd deny there is overdiagnosis, but "hoax" is a bit pejorative, I'd say. The drugs improve the situation sometimes, that's all. It may not be the ideal solution, but as near as I can tell, we don't live in an ideal world.

Cheers, Dan.

ADD is being studied.

Do you remember the "fraud" of directed writing? It was sold as something to help the severely retarded and autistic. It was HUGE for a while- and people genuinely believed in it- but then a study was done that tested whether it was the aide of the person who was being aided who was actually responded and it turned out that everything was coming from the aide- even thought the aide didn't realize that that was what was happening. The aides honestly believed in teh process and had no idea that their "directing" was actually simply completely their own writing- with no input at all from the disabled person.

It was very sad. Parents had been so filled with hope by this technique- to have the first contact with a child who was lost in their own body. It was a sad thing to see the expose in this. It crushed many people. But the good thing about science is that even though it may crush people- theories are overturned and new theories pop up. It isn't static.
