Fiber optic component maker Oplink files IPO
WASHINGTON, July 17 (Reuters) - Oplink Communications Inc., whose fiber optic components and optical modules are designed to boost the performance of optical networks, has filed to raise $172.5 million in an initial public offering.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company, whose customers include Cisco Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:CSCO - news), JDS Uniphase Corp. (NasdaqNM:JDSU - news) and Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news), plans to use the funds to expand manufacturing facilities and for marketing and distribution activities, according to a filing on Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The money may also go for research and development, working capital and other general corporate purposes, the company said.

Oplink has applied for a Nasdaq listing under the symbol ``OPLK'' (Nasdaq:OPLK - news). The IPO will be managed by Robertson Stephens, CIBC World Markets, J.P. Morgan and UBS Warburg.

Data traffic has increased greatly over the past several years, furthering demand for more capacity, or bandwidth, on communication networks, the company said.

Limitations on those networks and recent breakthroughs in optical component technology have led to the widespread use of fiber optic technology, which is able to transport larger amounts of data.

The market for optical components and modules is highly competitive, said Oplink, which is being sued for alleged patent infringement in two separate cases by E-Tek Dynamics Inc., which was recently acquired by JDS Uniphase, and Chorum Technologies Inc.
