How the hell do people like this make it on TV? This has got to be the most idiotic comment I've heard from the media so far today.

The reporter probably extrapolated from the following comment from today's CC:

- More specifically, each of our 980 nm pump businesses is unique. JDSU's chip business is better suited to non-grating stabilized applications such as short haul uses and SDL's chip business is better suited to very high power grating stabilized applications.

I think the term "reliable" may have been taken wrong. SDL's fiber Bragg gratings make the pumps more reliable at the speeds in question but this should not reflect in a negative way on JDSU's that are used in a different environment.

To play the devil's advocate, reporters --- and copy editors -- really do have a challenge when faced with technology as complex as fiber optics. I've been following both companies for two years (more for JDS Fitel) and I still get tied in knots.

<<I'm watching Bloomberg TV on the net right now and just saw a spot w/ their reporter from the Naz big board site. The woman said that JDSU is buying SDLI because SDLI developed and I quote, "a laser that is more powerful and more reliabe then JDSU's". How the hell do people like this make it on TV? This has got to be the most idiotic comment I've heard from the media so far today. >>

If you think that is odd (and from the US) you should see how dumb we Canadians can be... the "CTV National News" had a story on the merger and identified 6 people in the story.
Now the bad news they only got one name correct.

This from the company (CTV) that has just been bought out by Bell Canada. Yes, the same company that sold it's position in Nortel several months ago. What a great move sell Nortel buy CTV!

The good news is our Ottawa Citizen (I think) was the first newspaper to break the JDSU / SDLI story.

Glenn
