The following was culled from RB OT: IDC "filling the airwaves" A Sunday morning reflection. Jim, Your post has hit on a note about something that relates to my inner conflict concerning the very strong position in and years of research I have done in wireless telecommunication stocks versus my role as a clergyman. On the one hand, I relish stories from Finland and Japan about how everyone has a cell phone to his ear -- and more and more capacity for more and more "information" is building every day. In fact, IDC is one of the leaders. That of course means big bucks eventually for IDC shareholders. But the spiritual leader side of me says. "How sad!" At a time when there is a terrible shortage of time for personal reflection, meditation, prayer, or silence, I am investing in a company that will make even more "information" possible. I know there needs to be much more time to commune with our Creator, not less time. We are already distracted enough. But my investment is helping facilitate more distraction. So, an ongoing battle of conscience pulls me side to side. At least for the time being I am resolving it this way: 1. I don't dwell on the very sad proliferation of "information" at the expense of "quiet time" 2. I stress the very positive result of IDC technology: People in developing nations (hundreds of millions of them) will in the future be able to communicate with loved ones. While there was only one phone per 1,000 or more persons until now. It will be possible for there to be wireless phones available in one's home town or neighborhood. No 40 mile trip just to use a phone! The quality of life for these hundreds of million of people therefore will be greatly enriched. Community, love and concern will be better enabled in developing nations because of IDC technology. 3. I am getting a better sense of how I should use the IDC profits I sense God has and will entrust to me as His steward. Perhaps my "Higher Power" [coming from where I do I see this as my Lord (boss), Jesus] is directing me to use the profits to make it possible somehow for people to regularly get away from the "information age" stuff and just get quiet, and listen for directions from their Higher Power. Wouldn't it be something if my IDC profits went to facilitating people's escape from the very radio waves our IDC technology has enabled? Since I strongly believe that ALL the profits from IDC's 400% gain is share price are really God's and not mine (I'm just the steward), I am trying very hard to find how God wants those profits used. (By the way, I thinkl that a 10% tithe is only a partway gesture. That's a very laudable goal for someone just making ends meet. But up to a 90% tithe may be what our Higher Power is asking for those who have done well or will do well well later this year from their IDC investment. I shared with some of you last year my very strong belief that God had directed me to IDC in order to bring about something God wanted done with the earnings I would eventually have. My encounter with God on then subject of IDC was while IDC was trading at $4 to $5. Talk about a prophetic word being fulfilled a hundredfold. How about four hundred fold! In February 1999 - over a year ago - I demanded that God give me some "confirmation" of what I thought I heard God telling me in my devotional time, namely that God was going to use this IDC stock -- that had been so disappointing for so many years -- to accomplish something God wanted done. In my "quiet" time, I believe I heard God respond to my demand for a confirmation of this "prophetic word: "You dummie, Bill! The confirmation is in the name of the company itself!" "What? I responded." I believe God then put in my mind: "The confirmation is in the name of the company I want you to significantly increase your investment in: 'InterDigital Communications' and I'll tell you later how I want you to use the earnings from that increased investment." "You say you need confirmation? Envision this, Bill. Hold out your arms, as if extending help to someone. OK, now, picture this. I'm going to communicate" my blessings to others through your outstretched arms. My blessing will come to others as you extend your hands - with 5 digits on each hand ... inter - digitally . I am going to "communicate interdigitally" so to speak, using your outstretched hands. Get it Bill?" "Don't worry that the share price has been in the $3 to $5 range forever (in your time, not mine). You've done your due diligence. You know this company inside and out." (Well, I'm not sure God used the word 'due diligence' but that's what came to mind as to what God meant.) "Now step out further in faith." That dialogue with God was in those bleak IDC days in February 1999, after the withdrawal of Alcatel and Siemens. In November, 1999 (after I had substantially increased my IDC holdings in the meantime), the price started rising and is now up 400%. (And I think we have a long way to go still). I didn't start this post intending to share all that! [And I'm certainly not encouraging anyone else to buy IDC because of what I sense God is communicationg to me. Nor am I suggesting that anyone omit doing lots of due dilliegence research work on all their investments.] Maybe its because I'm not preaching anywhere this morning. My formal worship this week was yesterday and I preached at a Methodist church earlier in the week. Anyway, thanks to all who have read this far in my post for giving me the opportunity to share that Sunday morning witness. And thanks, Jim, for allowing a little "off topic" shaing this morning about our reaction to what's on the air waves. Bill
