Secondly, the answer to your question is actually quite simple. Arab science has suffered because of the lack of worship in any current day Muslim's life. While 5 daily prayers may be prescribed, few are known to practice them. In the days of 7th or 8th century and onward, the mosques weren't simply for praying, they were community centers, schools, and places to learn a variety of subjects in addition to being places for performing prayers. Unfortunately, many people to this day do not know the role of the mosques in those days when significant advances in the sciences were being made. I don't believe the role of any religion negates any faith. Quite to the contrary, you can see verses in the Qur'an, Bible, Torah that do infact prove the existence of God. Unfortunately, people have come under the impression that religion is anti-science when infact it is the ignorance of the people propagating such a myth. I have read the bible and the torah but am not very well versed in either. However, I can cite many examples in the Qur'an where indeed the verses speak of topics modern science is just now becoming familiar with. With regard to the "repression," I think thats highly subjective and cultural and has nothing to do with Islam. Obviously, for both sexes (m and f) it is always best to have a degree of modesty in your appearance. This is not a new idea, as witnessed by the attire of the Christians at the time of Mary and her son Jesus (may peace be upon them both). The message sent to Jesus was no different then that sent to the other prophets and yet we have people today who elect not to learn from such examples. Unfortunately, many examples of things you cited have nothing to do w/ Islam but because these activities may be propagated by its followers, some people think there is a correlation. Its sad that people often get the wrong impression.
