Has anyone got a copy of the Piper report? Are they endorsing the pipeline, management, a pending announcement of some material import, or do they think it's way cool to be headquartered in the Carribean?

LLY has NOT dropped anything. It is just beginning. The patent is specifically for use of the combination for the treatment of sepsis as defined in the patent application. I am not able to judge the value of applying for this type of patent but XOMA holds a patent(s) for the use of BPI to treat meningococcemia. Your example, however, makes sense, and seems totally logical to me.
