Palmtops vs. Laptops I was in Starbucks today with my MobilePro 770 and a woman sat down next to me with a Jornada palm top. She was writing furiously with it. I chatted with her. She dropped out of law school to have kids and is a stay-at-home mom. Two half-days a week this Summer she is free while the kids go to a Summer program. She is writing a novel on the Jornada and loves it. She told me she only uses the Pocket Word application and she would never consider parting with it. Her husband bought the new Jornada 545 with Pocket PC and spends most of his free time listening to MP3's on it. I told her I was writing lecture notes for a presentation and showed her my NEC device and a 32MB CompactFlash card as well. Then a guy came into the store and sat down next to us with a laptop. We watched him pull it out of his briefcase and boot up. The laptop looked absolutely gigantic. We remarked how one can never live without the "instant on" features of the Window's CE devices and the improved battery life over most laptops. When it was time to go I tucked away my MobilePro in a small carry pack while she dropped her Jornada in her purse. I felt reassured that I wasn't the only person in the whole city who purchased a palm top Windows CE device.ZDNet 2.1 megapixel digital camera review I read a very thorough review on 2.1MP digital cameras and the most economical, yet full-featured camera was the Nikon Coolpix 800. The others in the competition were the HP PhotoSmart C500, the Kodak DC280, the Olympus C-2020 Zoom, the Toshiba PDR-M5, and the Ricoh RDC-5300. Notably absent was the Canon S10, the CoolPix 950 by Nikon, the Epson PhotoPC 850 and Fuji. Canon has been criticized because of the lithium photocell battery it uses which makes the use of AA impossible in a pinch. Also, the rechargeable battery pack is sold as an option; an expensive lesson I learned when I bought my sister the Canon A50 last Chrismas. Nikon was probably allowed only one model for submission. The Epson is probably too full-featured (and expensive) to be considered in the class of cameras evaluated. I would recommend the Nikon CoolPix 800 as an excellent and economical camera, especially as an entry level unit. The price is closing in on $400 with the extended Nikon rebate I linked this weekend.PocketPC devices are reviewed I traded my Cassiopeia E-100 for the E-115 and am awaiting shipment currently. The reviews I have read have been favorable to the Compaq iPAQ because of its svelte design, a highly readable sidelit LCD screen which is enhanced outdoors by direct sunlight, and extended battery life with the environmentally friendly Li-polymer battery that is apparently molded to the inner casing of the device. The iPAQ is the only current PocketPC device without a CF slot. Thus, it is priced and featured to compete directly with the Palm IIIc. The screen does some 4,000 colors and lacks the same vibrancy as the 16bit Casio TFT screen. Also, the lack of the CF slot is seen as a disadvantage, although an afforable cradle for CF attachments is available. Recall that Casio is coming out with a next generation device that uses MMC and is significantly smaller than the E-115 which is described by some as a "brick".Napster I saw Shawn Fanning on the cover of Fortune. I thought that was impressive. This week Bill Gates is on the cover. I didn't know how to interpret this. I did find the following letter to the editor of the NY Times (Circuits) interesting...To the Editor: I have been following the Napster revolution and the recording industry's ill-fated efforts to stem this tide of free information. Before MP3's, I bought thousands of CD's and vinyl records, and I spent many a night creating mixes. Now here comes MP3, allowing me to create my mixes on the fly. And since it's digital, I can connect a laptop and carry my entire compressed-music library wherever I go. The recording industry's efforts to stem these benefits to the consumer is misplaced. Ten years from now, people will wonder why a distribution system had so much power. Songwriters, performers (e.g., Metallica) and musicians: Rejoice at the freedom you will be given and get ready to hit the concert circuit. Without the protection of the distribuion system, you'll have to make a living the old-fashioned way. Ausdauer
