On the surface, earnings look pretty good. Forward guidance is what will tell the tale though. On to the conference calls later tonight.

Redback Ntwrks (RBAK) 156 1/2 -7 11/16: Reports Q2 loss of $0.05 a share, $0.04 better than the Zack's consensus of ($0.09);

Applied Micro (AMCC) 125 7/16 +11 11/16: Company posts a $0.21 EPS, $0.04 better than the consensus mean estimate. Revenues were $74.2 million, an increase of 134% over the year-ago total of $31.6 million.<BR; HREF = briefing.newsalert.com see; ; see

Ariba (ARBA) 103 1/2 +12 3/8: -- Update -- On the conference call, company reports that deferred revenues soared to $154 mln from $85 mln in the prior quarter, pointing to great revenue visibility going forward. Stock has added 11 to 114 1/2 after hours after its 12 point gain during the day.

Ariba (ARBA) 103 1/2 +12 3/8: -- Update -- Conference call just concluded; a very upbeat call that was perhaps best summed up by this comment from Chuck Phillips of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter: "there's upside and then there's upside" -- ARBA now trading at 115 1/2, up 12 from the day session close.

Motorola (MOT) 32 7/8 -11/16: Reports Q2 earnings of $0.23 a share, in line with the First Call consensus of $0.23, vs year-ago earnings of $0.12. Sales of $9.3 bln were up 22% from $7.6 bln a year earlier;
