Hyundai takes initiative on communication business in North Korea
¡¡The Hyundai Group is taking an initiative to establish communication infrastructure and service in North Korea.
¡¡
¡¡A source at Hyundai said the group's former honorary chairman, Chung Ju-yung, agreed with North Korean Leader Kim Jung-il last month for Hyundai to provide wired and mobile communication services in several regions in the North.
¡¡
¡¡The source said Hyundai has submitted to the government a proposal for this project, which may involve South Korean communication equipment and service firms.
¡¡
¡¡Industry experts predict Onse Telecom, in which Hyundai is a prime shareholder, will join the project for long distance and international calls, and Hanaro Telecom will participate in mobile communication service for the North based on WLL(wireless local loop) technology.
¡¡
¡¡Mobile phone service operators, including SK Telecom, may possibly join the project to offer service in Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.

gc - DT has recently had a little difficulty consumating its deals. There is no reason to assume that they will be any more able to get a VoiceStream deal done than any of their other bright ideas.

DT is still very recognzable as the Governement monopoly it once was and is heavily overstaffed with employees that are basically unncessary but with the German employment laws almost impossible to lay-off.

They knew how to make mone when they had a total monopoly and could charge average Germans big per minute charges in an arcane routing system that was very very complex and very expensive for the hapless customers. Now the only quick fix that they can see is buying GSM operations around the World in the hope that their brilliant managment "expertise" will benefit these operations.

Many European businesses have thought that about the US market. IMHO DT hasn't demonstrated that it will be top of this class. The US is one market where GSM is going to have to compete on a level playing field with the Q ......the game should be great fun to watch.

Personally I wouldn't advise putting a bet on the GSM team.

It is going to be great fun to watch how GSM tries to compete with 1X in January....

Best regards,

L
