tippet, I ran across a report this morning, 2% of the world owns a computer and 7% own cell phones. Imagine what happens if China and India (over 2 bil) take off like the US has (300 mil).

The loss-leader / closeout hardware deal at Fry's Electronics here in Silicon Valley is now a K6-333 CPU and a motherboard to put it in for $79. Ninety percent of people buying a new computer at the consumer retail level don't need more horsepower than that, or even that much.

(edit at 5:55 -- oops, just read chic's opposing view)

And a 10GB drive is $80, and DRAM is still more or less a buck a megabyte, and a 15-inch monitor is $150, etc., etc.

Until I decide to spring for $50 a month for DSL internet service, my P1-200, which was last year's closeout, is limited by the 56K phone line.
