the offer is not unlike what the disgruntled moviegoer encounters upon returning to the box office to complain about the theater accommodations... and he is handed a free ticket to return anytime he likes.

or the local hardware store clerk that makes a copy of a key for you, then says cheerfully as you pay for it, "if it doesn't work, just bring it back and we'll make another one for you!"

Too many people will abuse the offer and sign up themselves with another alias. Spammers will be answering themselves with another alias.

That really hasn't been much of a problem here in the past, even when we were doing the "free trial" thing. And I believe that was more likely to be an issue then than it would be now.

With the "free trial" thing, we were exposed to anybody and everybody if they wanted to join to do just that (and worse). In this case, we're talking about people being hand-picked by existing members. I don't think people will want to do that to their neighborhood.

But if they do, Jeff and I are here to deal with that. And, personally, hunting down those cases has always been one of my favorite challenges here. Spamming is the only thing I've ever pursued more aggressively than multiple accounts.

We'll see how it pans out, but I think that's going to be a non-issue.
