Being in a group is best, but having a handgun is of marginal use for bear attacks, especially, large like browns. Just not enough oomph to knock 'em down if they are really intent on getting you unless you hit the central nervous system, which is pretty tough to do on a charging bear. Their brains are about 20% of their apparent head size and forget the spine. Even a long gun might leave you hurtin' or dead for the same reason. You can't just shoot every bear you come across and bluff charges break off somewhere around 15 to 20 feet. Think you can hold your water? -g-

The old Alaska joke is a guy is talking with his guide, going over his equipment list which includes a 44 mag. The guide tells him to make sure and file off the front sights. Puzzled, the guy asks why? So it don't hurt so much when the bear shoves it where the sun don't shine. -g-

MB, precisely the experience i had in the capital of crime, Johannesburg. as soon as i was armed, the muggers ceased and desisted magically, in spite of the gun being concealed. it seems they can indeed smell the potential for trouble. of course i can only speak for human predators...the African wildlife tends to stay clear of the city...excepting a panicked ostrich i once saw running down Joubert Street on a Monday morning. -g-
