Somebody on Yahoo asked about whether today's rise could be due primarily to short covering and whether more recent stats are available about the number of shares short (short interest). Following is my post from Yahoo:

Short Interest stats for Nasdaq stocks are released during the last week of the month, so the Short Interest for the month of July will be released in a week or so.

Until then, there is no way of knowing how many ASPT shares are currently short, but I would guess many of them have covered by now.

Today's rise could be, in part, due to short-covering as shorts sometimes expect further downside after the panic decline we saw last Tuesday. When the stock shows strength, as ASPT has in the past few days, they decide to cover, rather than seeing their profits erode.

Short-covering bounces can often retrace a bit, then are followed by more meaningful rallies. There may be some trepidation before the ASPT formal earnings release on Wednesday after the close.

I'll be interesed in hearing ASPT's comments about profitability over the next few quarters. If they state that they will not have earnings during the next one or two quarters, I would hope their statement is accompanied by comforting forward-looking statements which justify the shortfall in a rational manner.

If their forward-looking statements are not positive, we could see another round of selling, albeit not nearly as significant as last Tuesday's selling.
