At any rate, as I said before, call Gateway yourself, call AMD IR-- let us know what you hear. I will post any response from Toni as soon as I get it.

Doug,

I would have preferred that you posted after a reply from Tony. Anyway, let us know what she says and thanks for the g2.

Al

Doug,

Could it be that GTW is not going to be selling the Slot A TBird systems at all, since they are not compatible with their current configuration, and will resume shipments when GTW switches over to Socket A?

GTW has their own @$$ to save with earnings coming up. I was actually surprised to see GTW take the blame so early on. In light of the earnings period, maybe GTW decided to take a different stance.

Doug,

You wrote "but why the heck would GTW technical guys be telling their sales reps such things right now?"

I've found by following people's incentives you can predict behavior with astonishing accuracy. So, let's see what is happening from Gateway's POV. A customer calls up wanting a 1 Ghz T-bird. Gateway can sell them a 900 Mhz T-bird, or a 1 Ghz classic (which Gateway will make far more money on). Gateway has a huge financial incentive to convince the customer that the 1Gz classic is the machine to get.

What if the customer is insists on a 1Ghz T-bird? Gateway then has to make a choice. Either lose the sale or convince the customer that it is impossible to get a 1Ghz T-bird from anyone anytime soon.

You also wrote "They could be lying to try and sell the Classic 1GHz systems... but that's an awfully nasty lie."

Doug, are you really telling me that you are shocked that a salesperson would lie to make a sale? Are you serious?

Now maybe there is a problem with 1 Ghz T-birds. I certainly can't find any OEM selling them. But the sales and sales tech desk of ANY company, IMHO, is a completely unreliable source for this kind of information. My experience has been that there are a certain percentage of people manning those positions that will say _anything_ to make a sale.
