Harry,

I just called my local GTW store and they told me there was a problem with the chip

I think if there is someone who is the lowest in the food chain, it is someone at a local retail store.

Thinking about it, I think my theory seems plausible, and consistent with what we have heard from the official sources.

The 1 GHz Tbird does not work reliably with the current motherboard / case / powersupply that Gateway is using across the board in all their Select line of computers. Since the Slot A parts will be short lived, Gateway is not about to redesign their system just to sell 1 or 2 weeks worth of 1 GHz Tbird processors sales. They will wait until their Socket A systems come on line and shipments of 1 GHz Tbirds will resume then.

Joe

Harry, Josef, I wonder if it could be slot A 1GHz only? Perhaps the cartridge gets too hot or something? (this would be consistent with what that one yahoo guy was told-- something about the chips getting so hot they 'burned the motherboard', although, that seems improbable... maybe 'damaged the cartridge' or something?)

Harry, what is your local GTW store?
